Rosemary Heights Elementary student wins Democracy & Me art contest

A Grade 4 student from Rosemary Heights Elementary has won a round trip to Victoria after being named one of three winners of this year’s .

Student Chloe Chiang came in first place in the Kindergarten to Grade 4 category of the art competition, which was sponsored by the Office of the Lieutenant Governor and the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia.

Broken up in to three age categories (Kindergarten to Grade 4, Grades 5 to 8 and Grades 9 to 12), the contest invited young British Columbians to use visual arts to showcase the importance of community, civic engagement and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and democracy.

More than 200 entries were submitted from over 50 public and independent schools across the province.

“This art contest provides a unique opportunity to celebrate the vibrancy of connections between our public institutions and young people in this province while encouraging youth to express themselves through visual arts,” said the Honourable Janet Austin, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia.

As part of her win, Chloe will receive: a trip to Victoria in May to witness the unveiling of her artwork at the Parliament Buildings, a meeting with the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, a behind the scenes tour of the Parliament Buildings and additional souvenir prizes.

The winners from the other two categories were Richmond’s Joyce Lee in the Grades 5 to 8 category, and Victoria’s Jayla Boudewyn in the Grades 9 to 12 category.
