DISTRICT RESOURCE COUNSELLOR

1. DESCRIPTION OF DISTRICT LEVEL DELIVERY MODEL

Key responsibilities of the District Counsellor will include:

a) counselling students/parents/guardians as appropriate;

b) supporting school-based Critical Incident Response Teams;

c) supporting schools dealing with issues regarding student safety and well-being;

d) supporting school-based counsellors and child/youth care workers; 

e) supporting alternate and interagency program teachers and staff;

f) participating in or represent our school district on specific community committees and community agencies including Mental
   Health, MCFD and the Child & Youth Committee, etc., where appropriate;

g) assisting in the development, monitoring, and implementation of Employee Safety Plans and Positive Behaviour Support
    Plans where appropriate;

h) providing staff and parents/guardians with information regarding community resources;

i) working with school staff, community agencies and parents/guardians to resolve Level Two suspensions and effect the
   student's re-entry into school and/or assist with the process of determining an appropriate alternative educational program;

j) attending, if necessary, Care Plan and discharge meetings, e.g. Children's Hospital;

k) consulting with school-based teachers, counsellors, district personnel and administrators regarding students experiencing
    social, emotional, behavioural, mental health, and/or traumatic events;

l) as a member of a multidisciplinary team, participating in activities related to ensuring school and community health and safety,
   including Violent Threat Risk Assessments and supporting school-based Critical Incident Response Teams;

m) providing training and in-service to school and district staff (e.g. paraprofessionals, teachers, and principals/vice principals,
     etc.).

2. MINIMUM  ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

a) Master's degree in Counselling Psychology which includes a clinical supervised practicum;

b) two years satisfactory school counselling experience;

c) valid B.C. Teaching Certificate.

3. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE       

a) two years satisfactory teaching experience;

b) demonstrated skills and knowledge in counselling children and youth;

c) training/experience in the field of social, emotional, and behavioural needs and trauma response;

d) knowledge of the issues concerned with student safety, behaviour/safety planning and critical incident response;

e) knowledge of social emotional, mental health and abuse prevention programs;

f) experience in effectively managing a complex and diverse caseload;

g) thorough knowledge of programs and services for children and families in the district and community;

h) teaching experience in elementary and/or secondary level.

4. REPORTING STRUCTURE

The personnel in this position are accountable in the execution of their assigned duties to the Director of Instruction, Student Support or designate.
